Learn more about the first-ever trial of
eco-shoreline features in Hong Kong
The first-ever trial
In 2017, Prof. Kenneth Leung envisioned plans to restore Hong Kong's marine biodiversity and enhance ecosystem functioning, through eco-shoreline features, a novel concept at that time.
Along with the support of CEDD, the plan came to flourish in 2019. We deployed some original and imported eco-shoreline features in 3 regions ——
1. Ma Liu Shiu
2. Lung Kwu Tan
3. Sai Kung
to test our concepts.
The Features
We deployed
Oyster Baskets,
Eco-tiles with 4 different concrete mix
Armoured Units,
Tidal Pools, and
Enhanced Seawall Panels with two different patterns
in three locations.

Timeline
Our project lasted for five years and
held two workshops in total.
Start: 2018 Jan
Workshop 1: 2018 May - 2018 Jun
Title: "The Second International Workshop on Eco-shoreline Designs for Sustainable Coastal Development"
Deployment: 2019 Mar - 2020 May
Monitoring: 2019 Mar - 2021 Dec
Workshop 2: 2022 Jan
Title: “The Third International Workshop on Eco-shoreline Designs for Sustainable Coastal Development”
End: 2023 Mar
Result
We found a great enhancement in biodiversity, including
9 Barnacles, 32 Bivalves, 3 Corals, 37 Crustaceans, 20 Fish, 48 Gastropod, 3 Sea anemones, 1 Sea cucumber, 16 Sponges, 16 Tunicate, 26 birds and more!
In general, eco-shoreline may triple the number of mobile species individuals, and may increase the number of species almost by half!
These results are truly amazing and encouraging for Hong Kong's marine biodiversity, and citizens support our research! We hope to use the knowledge learned in this project in future eco-shoreline feature designs.
